I was originally going to post this in color, and link to the black and white, and even though the original has vibrant colors, I wasn't quite happy with the way they turned out. It's a toss up I guess.

color version

I really need to stop posting so many version of pictures, but you've really got to see that color. I would be interested to know which you prefer. Also, thanks for all the feedback on yesterday's shot! Now that I look at it after procesing quite a few other park shots, it seems a bit blue/yellow and lacking in red. I've updated the photo in yesterday's post and the original can be found here. You'll probably need to look at it next to the other to se a significant difference.

Yes, I know the color version has a lot of vibrant color, and knowing me, you'd think I'd have posted it in color, but I still prefer the b&w by a very tiny margin. Just opinion; they're both good.

I don't see how it's an action photo. They're hardly moving, lol. I suppose the dog adds a little "action".

hehehe, B&W rules.

the only thing I don't like from this picture is the white large area on the sea, it distracts me from the main subjects ;)

BTW, whats that strange thing in the head of the woman?

"I really need to stop posting so many versions of pictures" -- not true :) I like that.

This photo is very thoughtful. The color one is warmer, and I think that's what this photo is all about, given its subject, so I think the color is more appropriate. I do like black and white beach shots though. Maybe try the b&w with a bit less contrast so it's not so harsh and a little more warm. You probably already know this, but you could also play with the color balance (really shift the hues, like putting a color filter in front of the lens) before you make it black and white.

I deffinately prefer the color version better. The black and white is good, but you cannot really "feel" the photo until you've seen the color version.

I like the color version...it slightly brings out more details of the image. Good job Ryan! This reminds me of the shots I've taken around Tempe Town Lake during sunrise.

I like the black and white. I think it's cool to post both versions, it allows you to have feedback (or give you statistics) on which photo is favored.

This was a hard shot to take, I bet. The highlights on the water are a bit blown out, but again, this was a difficult shot to meter I'm guessing. Composition-wise this shot is dead on. Really great work Ryan, as always :)

Very relaxing :)

It's nice to have so many comparable photos side by side. I don't mind them at all :)

I'm usually one for the b&w version of pictures. But I really like this one in color. It's a lot richer, and like Ed said, more details are visible in the color version.

I will always go with color first. The more for the senses the better. Nice idea to post both and engage the viewers in a debate. Teachers do it all the time.

Warm regards,

John

I like the black and white one a lot more. usually I prefer color, but the lack of it gives this picture a very unique feel . . . I can't really describe it, but I like it very much. the color in the other version is very vibrant, I'll give you that, but this has more of a memory/dreamscape feel. very nice.

i like how you cropped out the horizon in this picture. i think this composition has a really nice balance as a result of that.

I like the colour version too. Much more interesting and less distracting on the sunshine reflection too. Nice composition too.

I think maybe you should include a polling system into your blog. Haha!

Nice work, Ryan. FWIW, I prefer the B&W slightly over the color only because my eye focuses more on the people rather than the whole scene (as with the color). I'd print the color version on a brochure and hang the B&W on the wall.
