The Big Island of Hawaii is much different than Kauai, which is where I went last year. It is much bigger, and contains much larger, but not as dramatic landscape. This is on the north end of the island, and to the right overlooks an immense valley below leading to the sea.
In the far distance you can see Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain in the world. Yes, - "tallest", not "highest" - measured from the base (at around 17,000 feet below sea level), it rises 33,476 feet from the ocean floor to 13,796 above sea level. The summit is home to the most impressive array of observatories on the planet. The name Mauna Kea means "white mountain" because it is snow capped for most of the winter months. Not bad for a tropical island in the middle of nowhere.

Now that you mention the lens, I really do notice a difference in quality, and even more so, in contrast between this and the kit lens. Great lens indeed. Can't wait to get a full frame digital to use it on!

Yeah, that F/4L takes some nice sharp photos. Nice wide angle too. I love the contrast in this, and the color!
And.. the rental car!! ;-)
